Harvest Celebrations

Last weekend we celebrated Harvest.  We thanked God for his goodness to us in providing food, but we also acknowledged that we have sometimes spoiled his wonderful world. The food that we brought with us was collected afterwards and taken to the Sharing Life Food Bank in Thame.

After the service, which was at Long Crendon School, we shared a pig roast and apple pie lunch, and enjoyed some autumn sunshine. Thanks to everyone who organised and catered!

Retirement of Pastor Jeff and Mrs Hannah Steadman (2) Sunday

A great spirit of thanksgiving was present at LCBC on Sunday - two services of giving thanks to God for all that Jeff and Hannah have done for our church and its people during their 37 years of service here.  Their contribution to the village, and to mission both local and international, were also recognised.  The church building was again bursting at the seams for both morning and evening services.

In the morning Pastor Jeff gave the children's talk, illustrating it with two recent gifts - a useful bowl made from a useless burr removed from one of our lime trees

and a walking stick created from a briar found on the Phoenix Trail

Gifts including flowers and a book of photos were presented.

There were contributions from Val, talking of the early years of Jeff's ministry,

a powerful testimony from Peter,

and a sermon from Andrew Davies, who had preached at their wedding and then at Jeff's induction at LCBC on 5th February 1977.

At the evening service there were more acknowledgements of how good God has been to us  in blessing Jeff and Hannah's faithfulness to him:

Andrew Davies spoke again with memories of Jeff and Hannah before LCBC

Jane gave a moving testimony

Hannah spoke about her early plans for overseas mission as a nurse, and how marriage to Jeff had brought her great involvement in the wider mission field

Paddy made us laugh with his reflections on being Youth Worker for LCBC and his growth under Jeff's guidance

And finally Pastor Steadman's sermon. You could have heard a pin drop as he spoke of his early years and experiences at Long Crendon. (By the way he is emphasising not admonishing!)

After the service there were more celebrations with, of course, cake!

lots of catching up......

plenty of hugs, laughter and a few tears.

It has been a weekend of mixed emotions - both thanksgiving and sadness at the end of a long and much blessed pastorate - and we pray for Jeff and Hannah every blessing in a long and happy retirement together.

To God be the glory, great things He has done!

Retirement of Pastor Jeff and Mrs Hannah Steadman (1) Saturday

How do you celebrate lives given in service to God and dedicated to him?  At LCBC we spent a whole weekend in thanksgiving for Mr and Mrs Steadmans' 37 years of pastoring, loving and building up the Baptist Church here in Long Crendon.

On Saturday 20th September 2014 the church family, along with old friends and members of Jeff and Hannah's families, came together for a wonderful party.

There was some amazing food

good company and conversation

and even more food!

There were people eating everywhere you looked
(well we did manage to feed 250!)

After all the talking and eating came the entertainment, as only LCBC, organised by Helen and Martin Walker, can do.

Jeff and Hannah were given a special presentation cushion (not that we believe they are going to do much sitting back and relaxing) and the evening began.

There were musical pieces from classical to jazz, choral, combo and solo.

Highlights included:

The silent monks with their Hallelujah Chorus

Welsh music from Elizabeth on harp and Kathy on flute

Neil's wonderful rendering of Yellow Tambourine

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang - an homage to Jeff's choice of music to drive to

Tom Finlay's singing accompanied by brother Jordan

Helen's version of I know him so well heavily influenced by her years working as church administrator

And who could forget the amazing Cat's Duet by Rossini, sung by a large number of cats who popped up all over the church!

The final item was a choral piece - Howard Goodall's version of Love Divine

There were also sketches which had us creased up with laughter (mostly poking very loving fun at Jeff) and in-jokes about vegetables, Wales and all things Welsh.

The Interview Drill

Millie has had to find a new assistant now that Aggie has retired...

Ron and Eth did a bit of canoodling

And even the Community Police dropped in with complaints about Jeff's behaviour

With Martin as a very dapper compere, it was a wonderful evening, to be remembered for a long time.

The last word belongs to Hannah who thanked all those who provided the wonderful food and entertainment and those who cleared up afterwards!
